Which of your own writings makes you most proud of yourself?

There are stories which strike a fandom nerve and get pimped on every second entry of your flist. Then there are so many more which are posted to far less fanfare. The author's assessment of their work can be quite different to that of the readers, and a fandom favourite might not bring the author as much satisfaction as the quiet little story that was read by three devoted readers.

My greatest writing acheivement... )

Today we'll be discussing your favourite piece amongst your own writing. What are you most proud of, and why?

Giles/Anya on Saturday

What's an ex-vengence demon to do when the world is about to end and everyone else is paired off? Go in search of a certain unattached Watcher, of course.

There’s Something To Be Said About Age And Experience by Mydeira is rated FRAO.

I love the way these two banter back and forth through this fic, how Anya is scared she's going to upset a relaxed Rupert and his confession of just want he wanted to do to her during the "amnesia" incident!

Have a great Saturday!

because flowers are pretty

I had a flower in my hair all evening while watching the fourth of july fireworks, so I took a picture. Now all y'all can have a gander at my dreadful speckled mug, in lieu of being able to point and laugh at Portus.

That blowed up real good

Back from the town fireworks. I got invited by the couple who runs the gallery I've had things in to a potluck on a deck with a good view of the fireworks. Saw some people I knew and met a couple of people, and had a few inevitable wallflower moments, but not that many.

One of the people I met was a director for the outdoor Shakespearean theater (and they do other shows as well, notably Shaw) [info]huzzlewhat and I frequent during the summers. I totally fangirled the theater and a couple of his shows, including "The Merchant of Venice," and I especially fangirled the subtext between Antonio and Bassanio. I did, however, restrain myself from saying "Ooh, just like Lex throwing Lana at Clark because of y'know, his attraction."

Asked the gallery friend about where I'd find a way to do some welding without gearing up for a whole damn career. I'd like to submit something to the juried show that's coming up, but the industrial strength glue I had recommended to me for the assemblage I'm working on is probably not going to cut it. I tried it, but I'll be surprised if the piece doesn't fall apart. Anyhow, she intro'd me to someone who welds for artistic purposes, but he didn't seem that excited, but the woman he was with said, "Definitely call us," so I plan to do so tomorrow. I have another piece I'd like to make and submit too, which I should work on this weekend. The deadline is 7/15, but it sounds like I could get a little leeway for the welding thing.

Fireworks eventually started, and they were actually stellar, even though this is a pretty small town. There were a couple of new shapes and effects I hadn't seen before. The stone deck was a great vantage point too, and it was nice to be in good company.

Off to shower off the bug spray and then jump in bed.

But before I go, those of you who thought Rona got a raw deal in the Clevelandverse and/or got a kick out of the idea of her and Andrew fighting the forces of darkness, go check out [info]sam_arkand, who has posted two chapters of Rona's homecoming in Baltimore.

My poor kitty

Have rolled my chair out into the backyard to watch the fireworks.  I can hear the big booms in the distance from the professional display in Marina del Rey mixed in with all the small ones here in the neighborhood.  The neighbors to the east are doing a nice little backyard display.  Some are snappy, bright, and tall, some are colorful but tame.  Holy smokes!  Someone on the next block just set off a huge fricking mortar that scared the beejeezus out of me with the huge-ass boom!  I didn't hear it go up, and I actually covered my head.  Although, to be honest, that is the reason I'm out here - to watch the cool, and highly illegal, mortars and stuff that the people on the next block always seem to have.  Damn, they just did another one of the huge ones.  I watched it climb into the sky, then flinched at the concussion.  Very neat, very pretty, and VERY loud.

I'll probably be covered in mosquito bites tomorrow.

*kicks motel wireless*

Apparently, the hotel wifi network isn't up to the task of logging me into my Comcast email -- though it seems able to handle pretty much everything else net-related. Blah, oh well. Long day, which I will post about extensively when I find a better wifi spot tomorrow. I have to be up around 6:30 to make sure I get a shower before biking over to the ferry dock for the ride over to Provincetown. : )

Side note: I know hotels in Boston are liable to be pricy, especially on July 4, but seriously this is the smallest room I've ever had to pay a hundred dollars for. If it's 6'x9', I'd be surprised. *eyeroll*

That said? Boston's fireworks show was FANTASTIC. It made for a great start to this weeklong expedition. Tomorrow, I'll have to make more preparations from the road -- specifically calling ahead to Long Island to make campground reservations, and getting in touch with Amtrak to directly arrange my trip back to Boston come next Friday.

Independence Day Quiz and Updates

Quiz

This week's [info]quiz_sshg deals with Glamours.

You might as well confess ... we've all done it. How often have you thought "if only I could just wave a wand and conjure up a glamour spell." Sadly, as Muggles, we have to rely on hairspray and make-up to hide our imperfections. The stories in this week's quiz have Hermione and Severus using a glamour for various sneaky and vanity related reasons. See if you can unmask the stories.

Try your hand a at matching the quote to the story.

Articles on writing deadlines

We have a bit less than four months left to prepare ourselves for the next NaNoWriMo (yay! Can't hardly wait for it!). So I thought I should share with you four links to articles about the importance of deadlines for writers:

1. How Important Are Deadlines For a Book Writing Project?, by Dave Taylor.

2. Deadline Management, by Scott Lindsay.

3. Why Writing Deadlines May Be (Almost) As Good As Money, by yours truly.

4. The Importance of Meeting Writing Deadlines, by Leslie A. Sartor.

Behind Closed Doors by Janedavitt

Today I'm reccing Behind Closed Doors (Giles/Spike - FRAO) by [info]janedavitt. Not a pairing I usually read, because Giles only really belongs with Buffy, in my opinion, with one exception to this rule: If Buffy is no longer alive, Giles is allowed to find love somewhere else. In this story, Giles is devastated by Buffy's death at the end of the fifth season. Spike rescues him from a suicide-by-vampire attempt, and gives Giles a reason to live again. Might be a stretch, but for me, it works. And Jane's an awesome writer. I just love her work. This one's got quite a bit of bondage and dom/sub kink, but it's consensual and not at all squicky, really.

Feedback Friday!

Yay! Your weekly round-up is here again! This week brought some amazing work by extremely talented Giles fans. Go, read the awesome stories or admire the fantastic artwork.

Remember, every time you leave feedback, Giles loses his shirt. Okay, maybe only in a delicious fantasy world, but you will make an author/artist very happy, so remember to spread the love!

[info]synecdochic

I'd been meaning to make a July 4th post about my tempestuous and tumultuous emotional relationship to this country and its government, but family bonding has thus far prevented me from having the time to do it. Instead, I shall present to you Allen Ginsberg reading his poem "America", with the accompaniment of Tom Waits providing piano background:

America

America I've given you all and now I'm nothing.
America two dollars and twenty-seven cents January 17, 1956.
I can't stand my own mind.
America when will we end the human war?
Go fuck yourself with your atom bomb
I don't feel good don't bother me.
I won't write my poem till I'm in my right mind.
America when will you be angelic?
When will you take off your clothes?
When will you look at yourself through the grave?

(Read the whole poem, really. Allen, baby, I miss you.)

Home alone

This is just too weird.  Hubby just left to go to a friend's bbq party - on a bicycle.  Mine, to be exact.  One of the guys wants to buy it, and so hubby is delivering it.  I will ride over later on my old Sportster.  I haven't hardly ridden that bike since I gave it to him.  (I don't like the handlebars he put on)

Anyway, I'm here by myself for a while, but soon I'll have to change out of my shorts & flip-flops, close and lock the house & garage, and go meet him.  He's all worried that I'll forget to bring his helmet with me.  Sheesh.  Have a little faith, dude.  Oh, right, he gets it from his mom.  Nevermind.

Happy 4th, everyone!  ::hugs::
